Thule is the largest nation-state in the North, a land embraced everlasting by the arms of winter. A place that is known most for it’s twinkling, crystal trees and never ending banks of snow. The wildlife here, like the people, are hard and vicious. Snow leopards, ice bears, seals, sea lions, sea dogs, arctic foxes, giant trap door spiders, and snow stags are common throughout. One of the principal powers of the region is the great house Thayne, with the people of the boreal forest being referred to as Thaynes.
Houses Vjornskyr and Grimaldi are the only two sworn vassals, both being endowed with vast domains and capable of summoning impressive armies in the way of peasant levies. This nation-state is, of course, reliant on others for their exports of produce to supplement the meager sustenance they are able to draw from the land. Worship of the north’s own goddess, Kh’mori, originates here in these snow blasted lands. Her priestesses are said to carry with them the cold of winter’s grasp wherever they may go.
At a glance the winterlands of Thule has created a hard, distant people who care little for anything other than tradition but upon closer examination this perception doesn’t quite hold up. The people of this region are warm enough to their own or those they know as more than acquaintances. After chiseling away at their icy exteriors one finds a people who are principled and steadfast in their relationships, as they do not enter them easily. It’s said that the friend of a Thayne will know that friendship for a lifetime, so it is best to be sure before attempting to win them over. The environment has created a reliance on community in order to survive, everyone has a job to do no matter how small. Severe, long-sleeved silk dresses lined inside with fur are quite popular while sealskin, fur lined jackets are almost as popular as the heavy, hooded cloaks that people seem to love. What little agriculture can be done here is supplemented by trade with the other kingdoms, importing much of their produce and exporting a great deal of furs, meat, ivory, lumber, precious metals, and ice -- which is considered a luxury for the wealthy in less frigid climates. There is only one annual celebration among the common folk and it is known as the Midsummer Equinox to usher in Spring while the nobility celebrate a mysterious affair that is steeped in ancient tradition and secrecy.
